Duke League - June 20, 2006
I got out with the league again today for the first time in three weeks. My former teamate (Bo) is out having knee surgery so I have taken a replacement (Patrick) for the rest of the season. In the last two weeks we have picked up a total of 9.5 points out of a possible 42 points to drop from a tie for first place into last place in our division. We played the front nine this week. Last night it was finally hot out (90+ and humid) but I was still unable to play decently.
I opened the round up with a 7 and did not improve much all night. The only good was making Bogey on both Par 5's.
On the first hole my drive was short and down the right side of the fairway on a dogleg left. I then proceeded to hook my fairway wood into the under brush on the left hand side about 90 yards out where I had to take an unplayable lie. From there I hit my 4th shot on to the edge of the green and three putted. I had several three putts the rest of the night.
The second hole is another dogleg left and I began the same short drive and down the right side of the fairway however from there I hit my fairway wood to within 5 feet of the green about 25 feet from the pin. But I followed that up with a bad chip that went about 10 feet and then putted another 10 feet before I lipped out on my second putt and finally tapped in for a 6. Two holes down and I had 13 strokes which became a theme for the rest of the night.
The third hole I was again on the right side of the fairway under the edge of the trees with a difficult shot to the green. I proceeded to hit two decent shots that hit branches and bounced into the woods before finally able to get out from the trees and into a trap in front of the green. From there I blasted across the green and drained a 30 foot chip from the fringe for an 8 with no putts.
The fourth hole is a short par 3 over a creek. I landed on the edge of the green 20 feet from the pin on the same level as the pin just above a big drop to the front of the green. After watching my opponents putt run from the back of the green past the hole to the front of the green (30 feet by) I talked myself into four putting because I was afraid of going down the front of the green for a 5 and another 13 over two holes.
The fifth hole is a straight open par 4. I hit my drive down the right side (I see a theme) into the trap about 150 yards out. From there I hit an Iron to pin hit to the right of the green and chip over the trap and three putt for a 6.
The sixth hole is a short par 4 straight and wide open. I hit my drive all of 75 yards to leave me about 275 yards to the green. From there I hit my Fairway wood to just inside of 100 yards in the middle of the fairway. I hit my pitching wedge to the edge of the green and watched as it rolled back into the trap. I hit a nice bunker shot to about 8 feet from the pin where I proceed to stub my first putt, roll one just by and then sink my third putt for a 7 and another 13 for the last two holes.
The seventh hole is a long par 5 with a creek right in front of the green. I hit a good drive down the middle of the fairway and another good fairway wood shot to about 120 from the front of the green just off the edge of the fairway. I hit my eight Iron just under the ball and it only goes 100 yards and bounces off a rock in the creek back to the fairway just short of the creek. I chip onto the green and get my first two putt for a 6 on one of the most difficult holes on the front nine with a short par 3 (120 Yards) coming up. I am thinking I may not get 13 on the 7 and 8 hole combination.
My drive on the eighth hole is short and lands in the middle of the trap in front of the green so I take my mulligan, our league allows one mulligan per nine holes, and hit a matching shot into the bunker 20 feet left. From the bunker I catch the ball of the heel of my sand wedge and end up 40 feet past the green in the rough. I chip 10 feet short of the green and then to the edge and three put for my seven and another 13 for the last two holes.
We get to the ninth hole, I am soaked from sweating in the heat, another long par 5 so I hit my drive to the right side of the fairway along way out and I follow it up with a great fairway wood shot to 100 yards in front of the green. I hit my wedge up the hill to just short of the green and it rolls back into the sand trap. I hit a nice shot out to about 10 feet behind the pin and two putt for a 6 and a total of 58 shots. I lost my match 6-3, my new partner lost his match 7.5-1.5 and we lost the overall for a grand total 16.5-4.5 loss.
